9 mistakes to avoid when changing Baby's diaper

Learning how to change a diaper may seem simple, and it's a gesture that any young parent will repeat hundreds of times. However, it can happen that some mistakes are made by accident or inexperience... Which ones are then to be avoided? Answers with Marine Bourgeot, childcare nurse*.

Do not change Baby right after eating

As the expert indicates, it is important to avoid changing the child immediately after a feed or meal, since moving the child can lead to regurgitation.

Never move away from the changing table.

One of the most important rules is to stay close to the changing table or the place where you change Baby. Indeed, it can take only a moment when you turn your back to have an unfortunate accident. Before changing baby, make sure you have everything you need (diaper, toiletries, a change of clothes) within easy reach so that you can get to it without going far away from the child.

Do not completely undress Baby

When it's time to take off the diaper, it's not necessary to completely undress your child. You just need to remove the clothes from the lower part of his body and leave his chest covered so he doesn't catch cold.

Do not clean Baby in any way

Baby should be cleaned from front to back, from clean to dirty. This prevents impurities from getting up from Baby's bottom to his genitals. This is even more important for little girls: don't forget to clean the labia minora, labia majora and vulva. For a little boy, lift up the purses to put the cotton. In addition, do not neglect to clean inside all the small folds, especially the groin. When Baby has had an overflowing stool, you must also be careful to wash him/her at the very bottom of his/her back as this can irritate his/her skin (and also smell!).

Do not use wipes or talcum powder.

For a daily use, it is better to avoid the wipes which are likely to irritate the fragile skin of Baby. Instead, it is better to use water on a cotton pad, simply, or liniment oléo-calcaire, based on olive oil, a product that does not need to be rinsed afterwards. Moreover, the use of talcum powder is not recommended, because of it can indeed occur the phenomenon of maceration. In case of diaper rash, the doctor may advise the use of a specific cream.

Do not hesitate to dry baby well.

In case the parent uses liniment to clean Baby, there is no need to dry, you can directly put back his diaper. On the other hand, if you use water, take a dry cotton pad and dab Baby's skin. Above all, do not rub! Once again, do not neglect the small folds.

Do not choose a diaper too big or small

When it's time to put the diaper back on, make sure to choose a diaper that is adapted to Baby's morphology, neither too big nor too small. To know if the child is comfortable, you can easily slide one or two fingers on each side of the diaper.

To avoid leaks

Bring the upper part of the layer up to the navel and bring out the tabs on each side. If it's a small boy, don't forget to place the penis downwards so that the urine doesn't touch his belly when he pees.

Don't forget to change regularly Baby

When Baby has peed, it is important not to wait too long before changing him or her, as this can lead to significant risks of irritation. When the baby has had a bowel movement, change him/her immediately.
