Why make your own shampoo?

Shampoo or shampoo is one of the hygiene products that contains the most harmful substances. You've certainly experienced this when you've bought shampoos that promise miraculous results and that, in reality, have only damaged your hair and scalp. What can be blamed on sulfates, collagen, silicone, parabens, etc.? You can find them in almost all commercial shampoos. Some of these substances are also recognized as endocrine disruptors! If you want to protect yourself from them while enjoying an inexpensive and truly effective shampoo, the best option is to do it at home. You will have the choice between a solid shampoo, which comes in the form of a bar of soap and can last you up to a year, and a liquid shampoo, which is quite similar to commercial shampoos with the difference that it doesn't lather. And for shiny hair even between shampoos, you can easily make a dry shampoo too!

The solid shampoo recipe

The solid shampoo is therefore in the form of a bar of soap. You'll need to moisten it, rub it between your hands and then apply it to your wet hair like a regular shampoo. If you wash your hair once or twice a week, it will easily last a year. It's particularly effective: hair comes out soft, silky and shiny! You won't need to use a conditioner. This solid shampoo is quite easy to make and ideal to carry around, in a soap box for example.

Acacia Concicinna or Shikakai

It is a shrub native to the warm plains of central and southern India. Shikakai means "fruit for hair" and has been traditionally used as a natural shampoo in India for centuries. Shikakai is actually an Ayurvedic herb used as a medicine for its strengthening and conditioning properties on the hair.

SCI powder (sodium cocoyl isethionate)

Sodium cocoyl isethionate is a sodium salt ester, or a fatty acid derived from coconut oil. It is used in cosmetics and personal care products as a surfactant and is often used in hair care products such as shampoos because of its ability to help water mix with oil and dirt, allowing them to be more easily rinsed off.

Here is a basic recipe that you can adapt to your hair type. All the details are at the end of the recipe.

Ingredients :

  • 10g Shikakai powder
  • 60g of SCS powder (sodium cocoyl sulphate) or SCI powder (sodium cocoyl isethionate)
  • 20g of vegetable oil
  • 18 drops of essential oil
  • 10g of hot water

Preparation :

Prepare a water bath. Put the surfactant and water and mix well. Add the vegetable oil and mix again. Stir in Shikakai powder and mix. You can use a spatula. You must obtain a homogeneous paste. Add the essential oil and mix well again. Pour the preparation into the mould of your choice, taking care to press down well. Leave to settle for 24 hours minimum in a dry place.

  • Dry hair: Argan oil, rich in essential fatty acids to strengthen the hair with your choice of essential oil such as ylang ylang or lavender.
  • Oily hair: Clary sage - Salvia sclarea, reduces excess sebum or dandruff on the scalp of excessively oily skin. This is most likely due to the mucilage formed by the seeds of Salvia Sclarea. If you don't have sage, you can add: lemon, tea tree, geranium.
  • Normal hair: One of these essential oils: rose, rosemary, lavender.
  • Long and thick hair: lavender or peppermint essential oil
  • Curly Hair: Broccoli Oil
  • Colored hair: replace Shikakai powder with Sidr powder (Jujube tree)

Liquid shampoo recipe

If you prefer a liquid shampoo so as not to upset your habits too much, the recipe is also very simple! We suggest two, depending on whether your hair is rather dry or oily.

Liquid shampoo for dry hair

Ingredients for 50cl of shampoo:

  • 20g of Marseille soap
  • 40cl of water
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil
Optional: 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice for the perfume

Liquid shampoo for oily hair

Ingredients for 50cl of shampoo:
  • 20g of Marseille soap
  • 40 cl of water
  • 2 tablespoons of green clay
  • 1 tablespoon of Jojoba oil
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil
Optional: 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice for the perfume

Preparation :

Grate the Marseille soap. Make the coconut oil liquid by placing it near a heat source. It becomes liquid around 25°C. In summer, you can skip this step. For the dry hair recipe, choose a liquid honey.

In a saucepan, pour the water and soap shavings. Melt over medium heat while stirring. Then let the preparation cool, which will harden. Then add the bicarbonate and essential oils. If the mixture is too compact, add more water. Add the vegetable oil and stir until a relatively thick liquid is obtained.

Use of the liquid shampoo

Before each use, remember to shake your shampoo bottle well. It won't lather much, but rest assured, it's not the lather that cleans your hair. Apply this shampoo mainly to the roots. Leave it on for at least two minutes and rinse.

Dry shampoo recipe

To keep hair clean and shiny between shampoos, you can also use a dry shampoo. This powder is very simple to make and is applied to the scalp with a powder brush. Then all you have to do is brush and your hair comes out clean and nourished! Buy organic ingredients for a shampoo, 100% natural.

Ingredients :

  • 50gr cornstarch
  • 20gr of green clay
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 10 drops of peppermint essential oil
You will also need a large jar, a cream jar and a powder brush.

Preparation :

In the large jar, pour the cornstarch, then the clay, the bicarbonate of soda and the peppermint essential oil. The latter will bring a feeling of freshness to the scalp at the time of application. Then shake vigorously so that all the ingredients mix well. Finally, pour into your container. And that's it!

Green clay is ideal for blonde hair but can easily be replaced. White clay is suitable for very light, graying or white blond hair. Red clay is perfect for red colored hair. Redheads may use a little turmeric, but sparingly as it may stain. Finally, brunettes will prefer lean cocoa. The latter must be natural and not sweetened.
