Onion Cough Syrup

INGREDIENTS

(Adapted from Healing Secrets of the Seasons: Recipes and Remedies That Soothe, De-stress and Energize Throughout the Year [William Morrow & Co, 1998])

This potent potion helps break up congestion in the lungs. It’s a good alternative cough syrup for people who react to the artificial colors and flavors in some commercial syrups.

1 finely chopped onion
1 1⁄4 cups dark honey (such as buckwheat)

PREPARATION

Place onion in a shallow bowl and pour honey on the onion to cover. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for about eight hours, or overnight. Discard the onion and bottle the syrup. Swirl 1 Tbsp of the syrup in tea or hot water, three times a day. If the weather is damp, take the syrup as is. If the weather is dry, swirl 1 tsp of lemon juice into the tea or hot water before drinking.
Honey is not recommended for children under age 2. If in doubt, check with your physician.
