Don't Let Incontinence Slow You Down

How to deal with incontinence.

More than 25 million American women suffer from urinary incontinence.

Physical therapy can effectively manage or alleviate the condition, according to a review of nearly 100 studies that was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. A physical therapist can train a woman to strengthen and improve pelvic and abdominal muscles that control the bladder. For more information or to find a physical therapist near you who specializes in women’s issues, visit the American Physical Therapy Association at APTA.org.

Get Cultured to Reduce Cancer Risk
Bladder cancer strikes about 68,000 Americans a year, mostly those over age 55, but cultured milk products, such as yogurt with “live cultures,” may reduce the risk. Researchers in Sweden tracked 82,000 people for nine years and found that consuming cultured milk products regularly reduced the incidence of bladder cancer by 45% among women and by 36% among men. The study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, did not find similar benefits for milk or cheese. It’s believed the protective benefit is due to the lactic acid in cultured milk products (which also include buttermilk, kefir and some cottage cheeses).
