Food Sensitivity and IBS

A food-elimination diet combined with probiotics can significantly reduce the symptoms of IBS.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is estimated to affect up to 30% of the U.S. population.

Its symptoms—bloating, pain and cramping, constipation and/or diarrhea, backaches and fatigue—can negatively impact one’s life. Researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Center have found that a food-elimination diet combined with probiotics (which increase beneficial intestinal bacteria) significantly reduces IBS symptoms. According to the researchers, “Identifying and appropriately addressing food sensitivity in IBS patients not previously responding to standard therapy results in a sustained clinical response and impacts on overall well-being and quality of life.”

Quick Tip
To identify your own food sensitivities, eliminate common trigger substances (e.g., grains, dairy, trans fats, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco) and note the results, or undergo testing by your doctor.
